Oleyl alcohol is a colorless or light yellow oily liquid. The melting point is 6-7℃, the boiling point is 205-210℃ (2kPa), the relative density is 0.8489 (20/4℃), and the refractive index is 1.4606. Soluble in ethanol and ether, insoluble in water. There are irritating fumes when heated.
Preparation method:
Mix ethyl oleate and anhydrous acetic acid, quickly add metal sodium flakes, and the reaction proceeds vigorously. After the reaction eases, add absolute ethanol and heat until the metallic sodium reacts completely. Then add water and reflux for 1 hour to saponify unreacted ethyl oleate. After cooling, extract with ether, neutralize, wash and dry, then evaporate the ether, and then carry out fractionation under reduced pressure to collect the 150-152°C (0.133kPa) fraction, which is oleyl alcohol. The yield is about 50%.
Usage:
Used in the manufacture of detergents, wetting agents, defoaming agents, lubricants for metal cutting, plasticizers and Fabric softener. It is also used as a raw material for organic synthesis and special surfactants, and can be used to produce oil additives, cold-resistant auxiliary plasticizers, lubricants and solvents, etc.
