Plant ingredient: a salt derived from the plant licorice, also known as licorice root extract
Function of dipotassium glycyrrhizinate
This skin conditioner improves the appearance of dry/damaged skin, reduces flaking and restores skin suppleness, and has anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties. In fact, clinical trials have shown that it is also an effective ingredient in treating atopic dermatitis.
In addition, research shows that dipotassium glycyrrhizinate can also inhibit tyrosinase activity and melanin production in the skin, so it can be used as a whitening agent to prevent pigmentation. More research shows that dipotassium glycyrrhizinate helps reduce redness and irritation caused by acne breakouts like rosacea, psoriasis, and acne. People can find this ingredient in a variety of care products, such as facial moisturizers/lotions, anti-aging serums, sunscreens, acne serums, cleansers, foundation creams, whitening serums, facial masks, and eye creams.
Safety/Side Effects
The FDA lists this ingredient as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) and can be directly used as a food additive. Clinical trials have shown that dipotassium glycyrrhizinate neither penetrates nor irritates the skin. However, the EU Cosmetics Directive and the Cosmetic Ingredients Review Committee expert panel believe that it is safe and non-toxic when used in OTC personal care products. However, because dipotassium glycyrrhizinate is extracted from plants, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Committee expert panel recommended that cosmetics manufacturers must ensure that pesticide and toxic metal residues are below acceptable levels.
