Vaseline is a semi-liquid mixture of alkanes or saturated hydrocarbons, also called petrolatum, which is produced by fractionation of petroleum. Its state is between solid and liquid at normal temperature. It has three colors: brown, yellow and white due to different uses. Ordinary petroleum jelly is divided into two types: white petroleum jelly and yellow petroleum jelly. Let’s take a look at white petroleum jelly:
Basic information on white petroleum jelly:
White petroleum jelly is transparent and semi-transparent Solid ointment has a slippery feel when in contact with the skin and has a certain degree of stringiness. The melting point is between 45°C and 60°C. It is insoluble in water and almost insoluble in cold or hot ethanol and cold anhydrous ethanol. Soluble in ether, hexane and most volatile or non-volatile oils; easily soluble in benzene, carbon disulfide, chloroform and turpentine, needs to be sealed and stored.
The synthesis method of white petroleum jelly:
The refining method is mainly used. It is obtained by using high-viscosity petroleum fractions as raw materials, dewaxing them first, then blending them with medium-viscosity lubricating oil, and then adding fuming sulfuric acid and activated clay for deodorization and decolorization. Hydrogenation methods can also be used for further refinement.
Uses of white petroleum jelly:
Defoaming agent; lubricant; release agent; protective coating. It is widely used as the base raw material for hair wax, hair lotion, cold cream, moisturizing cream, anti-cracking cream, lotion, lipstick and other cosmetics. It is also the base raw material for various ointment products in pharmaceutical cosmetics.
