Exposure pathways
Dimethyl phthalate can enter the body through absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract and skin.
toxicity threshold
Threshold: 5mg/m3 (time-weighted average) (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, 2005). No standards have been established for the maximum allowable concentration.
Acute toxicity: oral administration to rats, The median lethal dose LD506 is 900 mg/kg; mice are oral 7 200mg/kg; rabbits are oral 4 400mg/kg; cats are lethal by inhalation 9 300 mg/m3x6.5h; rats are inhaled, the median lethal concentration LC505 490mg/m3; small Rat inhalation 4 350 mg/m3.
Biological effects
In vivo and in vitro effects
It is of low toxicity. Oral administration of 4% to 8% (feeding) to rats had a slight effect on growth, and the 8% feed group was also accompanied by chronic renal effects. Effect on skin and eyes: Applying this product to rabbit skin does not cause irritation, but it can be absorbed. The LD50 of one application is >10mL/kg, and the LD50 of multiple applications (over 90 days) is >4mL/kg.
Human body effects
Health hazards: Large doses can cause anesthesia and inhibit the nerve center , causing drowsiness or coma. Mistaken use can cause gastrointestinal tract irritation, central nervous system depression, paralysis, and lowering of blood pressure. Human contact may cause polyneuritis. Can cause chemical burns if dropped into human eyes. No skin irritation or allergies occur. In humans, there are records of acute poisoning due to oral administration of this product. Workers engaged in the production of phthalate ester plasticizers may suffer from polyneuritis.
Human protection
Provide good natural ventilation conditions. Generally, no protection is required, but under special circumstances, a gas mask is required. Wear safety glasses and work clothes when necessary. Hands generally do not require special protection. When there is a high concentration of this product in the air, an industrial type A gas mask should be worn, and a filter should be used when aerosols are present. Use a filter-type A-type respirator. When synthesizing and applying this product, especially when heating this product or the plastic containing this product, it must be sealed to prevent the escape of vapors and aerosols. Smoking is strictly prohibited at the work site and good hygiene habits are maintained.
Leak emergency response
Cut off the source of fire. Emergency responders wear self-contained breathing apparatus and overalls. Plug the leak while ensuring safety. Mix and absorb with sand or other non-flammable adsorbent, then collect and transport to waste disposal site, or incinerate on site if safety is ensured. If there is a large amount of leakage, use dikes to contain it, then collect, transfer, recycle or dispose of it after harmless treatment.
Disposal method
Waste disposal method: It is recommended to use incineration.
Fire extinguishing methods
Use mist water, foam, carbon dioxide, dry powder, sand to extinguish the fire .
