SABIC is helping Charge Amps manufacture electric vehicle (EV) chargers with housings made from certified renewable polycarbonate (PC), an industry first.
SABIC supplies certified renewable grade LEXAN™ to Charge Amps
PC, supporting electric vehicle charger providers’ commitment to developing a circular bioeconomy and helping to mitigate climate change issues. SABIC
The renewable PCs in the TRUCIRCLE™ portfolio are made from second generation bio-based raw materials and do not compete with the food chain. The new industrial process helps reduce CO2 emissions during manufacturing and installation and is fully compliant with EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) regulations.
Electric vehicles are an important part of the decarbonization strategies adopted by governments and businesses around the world. Electric vehicles are now an increasingly viable alternative to internal combustion engines and can reduce carbon footprints. The availability of charging facilities is considered one of the key factors related to the transition to electric vehicles.
Charge Amps Dawn is the latest electric vehicle charging station with a charging capacity of 22kW from one outlet, certified MID (Measuring Instruments Directive) meters and 4G connectivity. Charge
The Amps Dawn shell contains 50% SABIC’s ISCC PLUS certified bio-based renewable materials.
Majed, Head of SABIC Building and Construction Division
Al-Saadan commented: “SABIC offers selected plastic solutions from our Building & Construction division that meet stringent industry standards for the manufacture of electric vehicle support equipment in terms of safety, reliability and durability. In addition, It also offers manufacturing efficiencies as well as better aesthetics compared to existing solutions. We will be working with Charge
Together with Amps, we are further reducing our carbon footprint during the production phase to support the world’s transition to an electric future. ”
Jonas Hellström, Mechanical Design Manager at Charge Amps, commented: “Design, innovation and sustainability are the hallmarks of Charge Amps.
Amps first priority. Bio-based plastics based on SABIC’s renewable feedstock allow us to combine low carbon emissions with Charge
Amps combined with premium exterior design. We strive to be at the forefront of technology. The strategic partnership with SABIC is a key step in becoming a responsible player in the electric vehicle charging ecosystem. ”
In addition to sustainability, EV charger manufacturers benefit from increased feature integration and design freedom. For example, interior panels, compartments, and consoles can be made of flame-retardant
PC production to achieve dimensional stability, high impact resistance and aesthetics. Additionally, thin-walled flame retardant features can help reduce weight beyond simply replacing metal, and can also free up space for other components.
LEXAN™ PC is durable and weather-resistant, significantly reducing manufacturing costs. It enables charger manufacturers to streamline production processes by using high-speed, high-volume injection molding and eliminates the typical secondary processing required for metal.
