The main uses of m-aminophenol are as dye intermediates and photographic developers. It can produce acid dyes, direct dyes, sulfur dyes, azo dyes, mordant dyes and fur dyes. Meta-aminophenol and p-aminophenol are pharmaceutical raw materials, raw materials for herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and heat-sensitive pigments. O-aminophenol is also used as an inhibitor of metal alkaline corrosion, hair dye, rubber anti-aging agent, antioxidant, stabilizer, petroleum additive, catalyst for organic reactions, chemical reagents (m-aminophenol is a gold and silver assay reagent), Intermediates for organic synthesis, etc.
Domestic m-aminophenol is mainly used in the production of dyes, especially functional dyes. Before 2000, due to various reasons such as synthetic technology, my country rarely produced such dyes, and domestic demand mainly relied on imports. With the structural adjustment of my country’s dye industry and the continuous strengthening of new product development capabilities, my country has now been able to use m-aminophenol and bromoalkane to produce a series of colorless pressure/heat-sensitive functional dyes, which not only replaced foreign products, but also entered the international market , changing the previous situation in which domestic colorless pressure/heat-sensitive series functional dyes were monopolized by Japan. In 2004, the domestic consumption of colorless pressure/heat-sensitive dye p-aminophenol reached 1000t. It is expected that the average annual growth rate of m-aminophenol consumption in this field will be about 15% in the next few years. In 2008, the consumption of m-aminophenol will be about 1750t.
The demand for m-aminophenol, a traditional dye, has been relatively stable. In 2004, my country’s demand for m-aminophenol, a traditional dye, was about 200t. The average annual demand growth rate in the next few years is expected to be around 5%. It is estimated that my country’s traditional dyes will consume 250t of m-aminophenol in 2008.
Another important use of m-aminophenol is the synthesis of anti-tuberculosis drugs. In 2004, my country’s demand for m-aminophenol for anti-tuberculosis drugs was approximately 200 tons. It is expected that the average annual growth rate of the demand for m-aminophenol will be 5% in the next few years, and the pharmaceutical demand for m-aminophenol will reach 250t in 2008.
The pesticide industry is also an important consumer area of m-aminophenol. Some fluorine-containing pesticides and fungicides use m-aminophenol as raw materials. However, due to the small number of varieties, the output is relatively small. Currently, m-aminophenol is consumed in this field in China. About 80t, it is expected to reach about 110t in 2008.
The important intermediate hydroxyl-N, N-diethylaniline is also a large potential consumer area of m-aminophenol. At present, the intermediate is produced using sodium m-nitrobenzene sulfonate as raw material, but the process is backward and the pollution is serious. However, the production process using m-aminophenol as raw material is relatively simple and the product quality is good. If m-aminophenol is more competitive in terms of price and the supply is sufficient, m-hydroxy-N, N-diethylaniline alone will consume about 1500t of m-aminophenol per year.
