It is understood that: Glycerin (also known as glycerin) is a colorless, odorless, sweet-tasting organic substance with a clear and viscous liquid appearance. It is miscible with water, alcohols, amines and phenols in any proportion, and the aqueous solution is neutral. Glycerin is a polyol moisturizer. The hydroxyl groups in the molecular structure can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, which plays a good role in absorbing and locking water. Glycerin has a wide range of uses. Currently, it has more than 1,700 uses. It is used in both food and industry.

The application and role of glycerol in medical treatment:

Glycerin is an osmotic dehydration drug with hygroscopicity and lubrication. It can be taken orally or gastrically. When administered parenterally, glycerol can increase plasma osmotic pressure, causing water to transfer from the extracellular space to the plasma through osmosis. Oral glycerin can be used to reduce vitreous volume and intraocular pressure in the short term before and after ophthalmic surgery, and can also be used as an auxiliary drug in the treatment of acute glaucoma. Glycerol can also reduce corneal edema when applied topically, but because this effect is short-lived, glycerin is limited to an adjunct to eye examination and diagnosis.

Glycerin is administered rectally as a single-dose suppository or solution to promote stool emptying and to treat constipation. Glycerin usually takes effect within 15-30 minutes. Glycerin is also often classified as a solvent-based laxative, but due to its local stimulating effect, it is often used as an auxiliary or alternative drug; it also has the effect of lubricating and softening stools.

Glycerin can also be used in antitussive preparations as a humectant and has an indirect peripheral antitussive effect by providing a protective layer on the pharyngeal sensory receptors.

Glycerol has a variety of uses in pharmaceutical formulations; including as a carrier and solvent, a sweetener, a preservative in some liquid pharmaceuticals, a plasticizer in film-coated tablets, and to adjust the tonicity agent. It is also used as a lubricant in certain topical preparations, such as eye drops, creams, and topical skin lotions, because it is hygroscopic, which enhances water retention after the drug is absorbed. Glycerin acts as a lubricant and softening agent in ear drops that remove earwax.
